John Loewen
Managing Director
John has over 35 years of investment banking and international finance experience spanning South Africa, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. He began his career on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a floor trader with Ivor Jones, Roy & Co., before becoming an equity analyst, where he was consistently ranked No. 1 or 2 by financial institutions, and then to partner. The firm was acquired by Deutsche Bank, beginning an international institutional career across investment banking and equity sales & trading. Among his notable mandates was the 1.4 billion acquisition of Tavistock Collieries by Lonrho plc. Deutsche Bank later transferred John to Toronto to build its Canadian Equities Sales & Trading desk, where he grew revenue by over 3x.
John subsequently served as Director of New Business Development at Global HubCo B.V., a London based venture backed by Glencore, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, and Accel-KKR, helping build globalCOAL into the world's leading online coal trading platform. Then he co-founded Loewen & Partners Inc., a Toronto based merchant banking firm that executed over 50 mid-market financing, M&A, and advisory transactions with an aggregate value exceeding $0.75 billion.
Born and raised in Canada, John studied economics and medieval history at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. He holds securities certifications from the Canadian Securities Institute and the Investment Funds Institute of Canada and is a former member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. A Canadian and South African citizen with Swiss residency, John is an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting, shooting, fishing, and rugby.
